As part of our mission, “Creating Community through the Arts,” Bihl Haus Arts, a community-based organization, nurtures and promotes the work of diverse visual and cultural artists in San Antonio. To date, Bihl Haus Arts has exhibited more than 500 area and international artists–more than 60% women and minority–in more than 100 exhibitions, and organized more than 150 poetry readings involving over local poets, a majority of whom are Latin@.
Our target audience is the resident population of Primrose Senior Apartments, the affordable housing community (about 70% Latina) where Bihl Haus Arts is located, surrounding neighborhoods, which are about 84% Latin@, and Greater San Antonio. In addition, Bihl Haus Arts currently offers the GO! Arts program at: the Wellmed-City operated Alicia Trevino Lopez (District 6) and Doris Griffin Senior One-Stop Centers (District 7); the WellMed Elvira Cisneros Senior Center (District 3); two Merced Texas Housing senior complexes (District 6 and Somerset); and at 9 City-operated senior centers in Districts 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 and 10, where a vast majority of senior participants are women, mostly Latina. Through varied programming, Bihl Haus Arts reaches out across San Antonio to diverse multi-generational audiences—Latin@, African American, Asian—, a majority of whom are women.
