HONEYLAND IS UVALDE, TEXAS. ONE NIGHT TO WELCOME A NEW FAIRYTALE AND A NEW BEGINNING:

Barbara Renaud
David Zamora Casas
Natalee Treviño
Victoria Zapata
David White
Mike Sanchez
Alejandra Klein

Armed with a grant from the UTSA (University of San Antonio) as artists-in-residence from the Democratizing Racial Justice Project, with funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, two artists, writer Barbara Renaud Gonzalez and visual/performing artist David Zamora Casas, are offering a one-night only experience at Bihl Haus Arts, San Antonio, with live stream performance by Casas, direct from his altar site in Del Rio, Tx.

The two artists, seek to challenge the prevailing story of violence in Texas they feel is centered in Uvalde. Through storytelling, original altars, performances, a special blessing and music.

They will do this on the Day of the Innocents, on Friday, November 1, when the nineteen children killed in the deadliest school history in the history of Texas, return to visit us according to indigenous tradition.

“Grief breaks your heart wide open,” says Barbara Renaud Gonzalez, a writer who understands the fragile border of life and death, coming from Oaxaca, Mexico, where she is permanently based. Oaxaca is a Mexican city that is known for its “Day of the Dead” indigenous traditions which embraces the fragile veil between life and death. “And it is in that opening space that birth can happen.”

David Zamora Casas, her artistic collaborator on this project, is a “maestro”, a master altar-maker notable for the originality and universality of his altars that seek to reinvent the traditional Mexican altar.

Both artists hope to create a unique project that will serve as a model for other places that are grappling with the emotional and psychic aftermath of gun violence, beginning with the neighboring towns of Honda and Del Rio. With the inter-connectivity we are and many times forget about.

The artists know that the Uvalde story is more than a local tragedy, as the story of violence is a national and international weight on all of us. The artists are intent on creating an intergenerational experience understood by everyday people. An event that is pioneering, vanguard, and bold.

All this through a blessing, an installation, music, poetry, song, myth and metaphor. To sustain and fortify beleaguered communities that deserve a new fairytale. For Uvalde, but for all, too. From a city that once was and will be a beautiful city once again.

“Living Witness to Wealth of the Soul: XICANX Mindfulness”
Exhibition QUEERATED by David Zamora Casas

“XICANX: Dreamers and Change Makers” is an international collaboration which brings the Mexican-American struggle for human, ecological, and civil rights to the world spotlight, co-curated by Greta de Leon, Executive Director of The Americas Research Network, Mexico City, and Canadian Jill Baird, former Curator of Education, Museum of Anthropology, Vancouver, British Columbia.
💄💋Originally presented at the Museum of Anthropology and currently on view at Contemporary at Blue Star Art Complex building C.

Bihl Haus Arts joins the City of San Antonio and the Contemporary at Blue Star in declaring August 2024 the first in the state of Texas
INAUGURAL XICANX MONTH.

Bihl Haus Arts’ artist-in-residence / Curator David Zamora Casas invites artists to turn a virtual lens inward and contribute an artistic expression which addresses ethnic-specific themes and worldwide concerns with positive light, humility, hope and compassion.
“Xicanx artists will find a platform to celebrate their culture and heritage while addressing urgent issues such as:
The performative pseudo patriotism of “plastic patriots”
The harmful impact of racist, homophobic, and book-banning attitudes affecting children
The legacy of Anglo-European colonialism and its ongoing effects
The challenges faced by people of color in cultural spaces
The prevalence of hypocrisy in society
By sharing their unique perspectives, artists can honor Xicanx traditions and embrace recognition for their community’s contributions.
Art brings power to truth when we speak our undeniable collective and individual AMERICAN experiences.

February 2024 Artist Exhibit
Daryne Rockett

Daryne Rockett is a self-taught, mixed media artist working and residing in Orono, Maine. Her foray into visual arts began after sustaining a brain injury while playing roller derby in 2014. Prior to the injury, she was regularly involved in the performing arts as a harper, song-writer, and singer with an undergraduate degree in theater, but she had very little experience with visual art. In the first 18 months after the accident, she found it too difficult to make music or be in the settings where she used to play.

Longing for a way to pass the time that would help facilitate rather than prevent her healing, she began “doodling” small mandalas on 3-1/2” square pieces of paper in black ink and then brightly coloring the works with magic markers.

The symmetry and repetition of patterns were a balm to her foggy brain. As her healing progressed, she found enjoyment in larger formats and other mediums. What began as an internal therapeutic experience evolved into an outward expression of deep feelings and complex beliefs.

Daryne has since brought the process of art-making into community settings with her fellow veterans, healthcare providers, and social justice advocates to create collaborative works both large and small. Her solo and communal works have been exhibited from the Maine Statehouse in Augusta to the Cedar Ridge Creative Centre in Toronto, Ontario.

Daryne’s paintings are a means of healing her brain, her relationships, and her heart. The meditative process of repeating words and patterns becomes the foundation of each piece, providing depth while reflecting the multiplicity of her connections to and understanding of each subject. Each work is an expression of gratitude for the generosity of our community and our planet, with compassion and heartfelt joy for their contributions to our interwoven lives.

The pieces in this exhibition were created to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the injury and the healing journey, with its many helpers, that have brought her to where she is today. In the early stages of that process, she could only manage some very limited activities. Her great-grandmother had taught her to crochet when she was a very young girl, and she believes that she was able to tolerate crocheting because she knew how to do it in her hands and didn’t have to rely on careful thought to move the hook.

A decade later, she can do much more sophisticated problem-solving on the fly. From that starting point she has branched out and experimented with many mediums, recovering fine motor skills and proprioception (the sense of where her body is in space) while also learning new processes and taking risks with much more complex and technically demanding tasks. Each tondo encapsulates a stage in that journey while simultaneously reflecting the sum of her growth to date. Appreciating each work means recognizing all the teachers and guides that were instrumental in making them possible.

For more information, the Daryne can be reached via email at harprockett@gmail.com, or her website at doodlerex.com, or followed on Instagram and Facebook @DoodleRexArtist.
