Forward Arts: Creative Pathways for Veterans
About the Program
The Bihl Haus Forward Arts Program offers free art education specifically designed for veterans and military families. This unique initiative was developed to help veterans navigate the transition between military and civilian life through creative expression — and to provide a lasting creative community long after that transition is complete.
Through regular engagement with the arts, participants:
- Develop new creative skills and confidence
- Build a meaningful personal art practice
- Connect with a supportive community of fellow veterans
- Process experiences in a safe, nurturing environment
All courses are led by professional artists and are completely free of charge to veterans and their military families. No previous art experience is required — just a willingness to explore and create.
Forward Arts is offered in partnership with VetTriip and the New Century Art Guild.
Current Course Offerings
Each Forward Arts course runs for approximately twelve weeks with weekly two-hour sessions in small groups of 12–15 participants. Veterans and military families are welcome.
In-Person Courses at Bihl Haus Arts 2803 Fredericksburg Road, San Antonio, TX 78201
Drawing & Painting (All Skill Levels) Experience the fundamentals of visual art in a supportive environment. Sessions include demonstrations, presentations, and creative prompts designed to help you explore various materials and techniques. All supplies are provided free of charge.
Watercolor (All Skill Levels) Explore the luminous and expressive world of watercolor with a professional artist. Sessions cover fundamental techniques including color mixing, washes, and composition. All supplies are provided free of charge.
Photography (All Skill Levels) Discover the art of photography through hands-on learning with a professional photographer. Weekly sessions include technical instruction, artistic guidance, and themed projects. No prior photography experience needed.
Ceramics (All Skill Levels) Begin the love of ceramics with a professional potter. Eight-week sessions accommodate all skill levels. Clay, glaze, and tools are provided.
Virtual Courses via Zoom
Online Drawing (All Skill Levels) Connect virtually with fellow veterans for guided drawing sessions. Through demonstrations and weekly projects, you’ll explore various drawing techniques and develop your own artistic voice. Free supply kits are available for local pickup.
Online Acrylic Painting (All Skill Levels) Learn the fundamentals of acrylic painting from the comfort of your home. Virtual sessions cover color theory, composition, and various painting techniques. Free supply kits are available for local pickup.
